From 2010-2015 Kayhan trained theater troupes working across thirteen provinces of Afghanistan in Theater of the Oppressed methods and the use of participatory storytelling and theater as a form of community development. Groups went on to work locally in their home communities, employing these tools in areas such as youth development, peace and conflict resolution, truth and reconciliation, creative strategies for women’s engagement, and cultural preservation and continuity. Kayhan also worked with the U.S. Institute of Peace and their Afghan media partner, Equal Access, on incorporating participatory elements and a call-in feature in their youth and justice themed radio drama.
Since the devastating U.S. withdrawal in 2021, she has advised the Uplift Afghanistan Fund in cultural preservation and continuity, convening local storytellers in Afghanistan and the diaspora to find ways to preserve the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Afghanistan, deploying culture and story as a means to build power and possibility.
